Overview

The “Cera-Stone” series by Artist Yang Ji-woon boasts a unique aesthetic in its expression of a butterfly resting softly amidst a white flower field. Her “Cera-Stone” series has been selected as an outstanding product for three consecutive years beginning 2015. Yang modernizes the famous inlaying technique used for Goryeo ware by plastering a layer of gold onto the texture of clay and then taking off the layer after heating up the entire ware. Her modern technique is called the ‘gold polishing inlaying technique.’ Through such a technique, Yang embroiders an idiosyncratic pattern that accommodates both clay and gold. When the pattern adorns espresso cups, plates, and mini flower pots, the various objects take on the elegance of jewelry. Yang’s technique does not employ enamel in the polishing process, allowing the clay to retain its unique color and its soft texture. While grounding her technique in tradition, Yang emphasizes the attitude of communication through which she reinterprets old methods in order to cater to people’s changing desires in today’s modern society. By making traditional artworks much more accessible to people and highlighting their beauty, her craftsmanship allows people to appreciate the value of art in everyday life.
