Overview

The Seonghyup Crafts’s “Traditional Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid Lacquerware Nail Polisher Set” is a collaborative project between Three Seven (777) and Seonghyup Crafts. While on an official tour through countries overseas, President Moon Jae-in presented it as a gift to ethnic Koreans living overseas. It is also widely used in the corporate sector as a gift to overseas companies. The design of the nail polisher set is derived from the humorous work found on a Korean folding screen with a highly stylized landscape painting of a sun and moon (the work was exhibited in San Francisco). By slightly tweaking the traditional folding screen, the designer made the traditional artistic expression more accessible to the public. On the surface of the nail polisher case, which comes in both black and red, etchings of deer, apricot tree, twin cranes, moon crane, and bamboo trees can be found. Although the case seems like a metalwork, it is in fact made out of plastic. Its plastic material reflects the designer’s desire to avoid the nail polishers becoming too cold, which can easily occur if both the polishers and their storing case have the same physical property. Inside the case are a set of tweezers, an ear swab, a cuticle trimmer, and a small pair of scissors.
