Overview

Lacquerware involves plastering lacquer tree sap onto dishes and furniture, which increases their lives and anti-bacterial quality. It is a highly detailed manual process that requires much patience. Lacquerware artisan Park Man-sun also waited with equal patience, slowly but surely, during the last four decades. Focusing on his craftsmanship of applying mother-of-pearl and lacquer onto objects, Park showcases his unique works with virtuosity. The “Lacquerware Tray Inlaid With Mother-of-Pearl,” selected as an outstanding work in 2017, is a work with yellow, light-green, orange, and sky-blue color tints on its edges, an aspect that goes against the conventions of traditional lacquerware that uses black or red. Park’s durable work is plastered with flax with a finishing touch of lacquer. It is not only surprisingly light but also has a sophisticated surface. The work can be used as a placemat or a plate. Just one month after its release, one customer from overseas made a purchase of a total of 20 trays. Other than focusing on his lacquerware products, Park also strives to restore Korea’s traditional cultural assets.
